Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
is a specialized therapy that can be very effective in helping people overcome
the effects of negative events and experiences.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a complex, highly
specialized therapy used to overcome the effects of traumatic or upsetting
experiences. It was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro.
EMDR combines several therapeutic methods including psychodynamic, cognitive
and behavioral with eye movements or other forms of rhythmical stimulation, such
as hand taps or sounds. It involves recalling a stressful past event and
“reprogramming” the memory in the light of a positive, self-chosen belief.
This “reprogramming” is helpful because at the time of a traumatic event,
strong emotions and survival instincts interfere with our ability to completely
process the experience, often leaving the experience to be stored in the brain
dysfunctionally. The dysfunctional storage of these memories and associated
beliefs and emotions can be the source of many personal and interpersonal
problems.
To be able to provide EMDR to clients, therapists undergo a 1-3 year training
period to learn the technique. Dr. Leanne Grant, Kim Feinstein and Mia Elwood
all are trained in EMDR and would be happy to assist you in your trauma
resolution.
